The Learning Web is dedicated to helping youth make a successful transition to the roles and responsibilities of adulthood.
Probably the first program in the country to combine apprenticeships with mentoring, The Web provides youth with hands-on learning opportunities in Tompkins County. Since it was founded in 1972 almost 10,000 youth have explored career interests as diverse as marine biology, law, watch repair, civil engineering, glass making, medicine, archeology, exotic animal care, and computer graphics. Each year community mentors volunteer approximately 10,000 hours sharing their expertise and workplaces with youth through Web programs. This one-on-one relationship teaches young people valuable job and life skills and empowers them through increased self-awareness and self-esteem to make a successful transition to the world of adult roles and responsibilities.
Youth who participate in Learning Web programs have a wide range of needs and interests--from the highly motivated student seeking educational enrichment, to the average student who needs to see the "real world" relevance of her school work, to the middle-school student just beginning to explore his community. Homeless and transient youth and young adults receive outreach services, intensive case-management, independent living skills training and paid apprenticeships through the Youth Outreach Program in order to assist these youth in developing the skills necessary for a self-sufficient, productive life. |

“My son is extremely happy with his apprenticeship. Hooking up with The Learning Web is one of the very best things I have done for my son, hands-down. Thank you so much!” Parent |
