Relaxing conversation, good food, and information on how best to maintain a home bring program participants together at Dinner Club.

Text Box: Youth Outreach Program (YO) services are available to any county young person age 16 to 25 who is homeless or transient, lacking a fixed, stable place in which to live. A non-residential independent living program, Youth Outreach has evolved into the largest county program serving homeless youth and young adults, and it is the only program with the capability to provide long-term, intensive case-management and independent living skills training to these young people.
As in all Learning Web programs, YO programmatic strategies are not prescriptive, but are tailored to individual youth needs and circumstances . After establishing a relationship with program participants through, for example, street outreach or referrals by friends, YO staff guide each participant in the decision-making process: first identifying his or her challenges, strengths and supports; exploring aspirations (an evolving process that is often repeated several times); then articulating goals and reaching a mutual determination about the services needed to reach those goals.
Several key features of YO have proven effective and attractive with youth, including its:
long-term, non-residential approach,
strengths perspective focusing on assets development,
flexible array of program services that give youth a strong voice. In addition to apprenticeships and employment support, YO also offers on-site mental health services through Family & Children’s Service of Ithaca, group activities that promote both independent living skills and general youth development ( “home keeping workshops,” i.e. Dinner Club, Women’s Group, community service projects, Parenting Skills workshop series, civic participation and recreational activities, etc.), and an on-site Computer Learning Lab with internet access, GED Prep software, and other educational and recreational software.
